I focus on portraying individuals as a set of distinct parts. By using layered or fragmented images, I express the human form.

These pieces may overlap, disconnect, or even contain incongruent elements. They come together to create a unified body and narrative, but their arrangement varies depending on the space, and each part tells its own story.

These images also represent the multifaceted nature of the ego, comprised of countless fragments such as memories, emotions, and personal narratives. These components each have their own tale and their interpretation and editing may change depending on our circumstances and the perspectives from which we view them.

In spite of the conflicts between these various elements, we are used to seeing it as a single person. Even if the texture is different or there are gaps between the images, it is not connected. Likewise, quite often we understand and accept someone's character or life as a story.

I made the whole exhibition as a loose self-portrait.

However, these images do not form a seamlessly unified body. Some parts are multiple, and some parts are empty all the way. There are pieces that do not fit anywhere of the body.

When attempting to depict a complete form using these images, various versions may emerge. But none encompass the whole. Each time there will be a missing piece and there will be a part that is not filled. It looks like it will work, but in reality it may not be possible to complete even one.

So too is the ego. Many stories may exist, but none of them are complete. There may be gaps in every story. It seems like you can make a plausible story, but in reality it may not be.

It is difficult for me to get my various desires and emotions to move in one direction. It feels impossible to make it into a coherent story. So I wanted to express individuals in a different form of story.

If a person is compared to a story, it may be a story with multiple versions and heterogeneous episodes. Resembling oral tales, the story that seems to have a single flow but fail to connect all the parts together.

For example, Greek and Roman mythology is regarded as a consistent myth and worldview. But there are many parts that do not fit naturally. Some episodes cannot be sequenced in exact order. In some episodes some characters looks like others. And some episodes are so different that they don't blend in with others.

Even if the two episodes seem to be organically connected, if you try to tie all the stories together, that will be incoherent. Despite these contradictions, we understand all episodes as a unified world. Our image about this mythical world roams somewhere in between all the episodes.

Maybe everyone is a universe like the myth. We want to understand our own world as a complete story. But we can't. We are always the universe itself, which cannot be described in a single story. The story that describes that universe maybe changes constantly depending on when and where it is read. Multiple versions coexist. Each simultaneously true and false. There is no single, definitive narrative.

I am expanding my work in the direction of expressing people as a set of 'narratives'.

개인을 여러 부분들의 집합으로 표현하는 작업을 하고 있다. 겹겹이 쌓이거나 조각난 이미지를 사용하여 인간의 형태를 표현한다. 이러한 이미지의 조각들은 중복되고 연결이 끊기고, 때로는 이질적인 요소를 포함하기도 한다. 그것들은 모여서 하나의 몸, 하나의 이야기를 이루지만, 그 배치는 공간에 따라 달라지고, 각 부분은 자신만의 이야기를 갖고 있다.

이런 이미지들은 기억, 감정, 이야기 등 무수한 파편들로 구성된 자아의 다면성을 보여주기도 한다. 자아를 구성하는 요소들 역시 각각 고유한 이야기가 있고, 그 해석과 편집은 우리의 상황과 관점에 따라 변화한다.

이러한 다양한 요소들 사이의 충돌에도 불구하고 우리는 그것을 한 사람으로 바라보는 데 익숙하다. 질감이 다르거나, 이미지 사이에 빈틈이 있어서 이어지지 않아도 그렇다. 마찬가지로 우리는 꽤 자주 누군가의 성격이나 삶을 하나의 이야기로서 이해하고 받아들인다.

그러나 이 이미지들은 매끄럽게 연결된 몸을 만들지 않는다. 어떤 부분은 여럿이고, 어떤 부분은 끝까지 비어 있다. 몸의 어디에도 맞지 않는 조각들도 있다.

이 이미지들을 모아 완성된 하나의 몸을 그려내려 한다면, 다양한 버전을 만들 수 있을 것이다. 그러나 그 중 어떤 것도 전체를 담아낼 수는 없다. 빠진 부분이 있을 것이고 채워지지 않는 부분도 있을 것이다. 완전한 이미지를 얻을 수 있을 것 같지만, 실제로는 하나도 완성할 수 없을지도 모른다.

자아 역시 그렇다. 여러 가지 이야기가 존재할 수 있겠지만, 그중 어떤 것도 온전하지 않다. 모든 이야기에 빈틈이 있다. 개연성이 있는 이야기를 만들 수 있을 것 같지만 실제로는 그렇지 않을 수도 있다.

나의 다양한 욕망과 감정들을 한 방향으로 움직이게 하는 것은 내게 어려운 일이다. 하나의 정합적인 이야기로 만드는 것은 불가능하다고 느낀다. 그래서 사람을 다른 형식의 이야기로 표현하고 싶었다.

사람을 이야기에 비유한다면, 그건 여러 버전과 에피소드들을 가진 이야기가 아닐까. 이러한 이야기는 구전되는 설화들처럼 하나의 흐름이 있는 것처럼 보이지만 모든 부분을 매끄럽게 연결할 수는 없을 것이다.

예를 들어 그리스 로마 신화는 하나의 신화이자 세계관으로 간주된다. 그러나 이런 이야기에는 자연스럽게 맞아떨어지지 않는 부분들도 많다. 어떤 이야기는 시간 순서를 알 수 없고, 어떤 이야기에서는 캐릭터가 다른 인물처럼 보인다. 어떤 이야기들은 다른 이야기들에 녹아들지 않는 이질적인 결을 갖고 있다. 두 이야기가 유기적으로 연결되는 것처럼 보여도 모든 이야기를 하나로 묶으려고 하면 앞뒤가 맞지 않는다. 이런 모순들에도 불구하고 우리는 이러한 이야기들을 통일된 세계로 받아들이고, 이 신화적 세계에 대한 우리의 이미지는 그 모든 이야기들의 사이 어딘가를 돌아다닌다.

모든 사람은 이런 신화적 세계인지도 모른다. 우리는 자신의 세계를 하나의 완전한 이야기로 이해하고 싶어 한다. 그러나 우리는 그럴 수가 없다. 우리는 언제나 하나의 이야기로 서술할 수 없는 세계 그 자체이다. 그 세계를 서술하는 이야기는 어느 시점, 어느 곳에서 읽느냐에 따라 계속 달라질 것이다. 그 수많은 버전들은 모두 진실이고 동시에 그렇지 않다. 거기에는 하나의 결정적인 텍스트는 없다.
